Williams Plumbing and Williams Civil partner on new $100M Bozeman ICU Project

The $100M project for the Bozeman Deaconess ICU Expansion has been awarded and the Mechanical and Civil contracts went to Williams Plumbing & Heating/Williams Civil Construction. Over 100,000 sq. ft. of new construction is being added to the campus, including a new main entrance, lobby area, and doubling the size of the Intensive Care Unit and Operating Rooms.

The Civil contract included site demolition, 30,000 cubic yards of basement excavation, new utility installation, and a 35,000 sq. ft. parking lot.  The shored basement excavation was intricately sequenced to accommodate a soldier pile retaining system.  They also supported ground improvement operations, including micropiles and drilled shafts to provide additional structural stability to the campus. Working around the existing facility made the demolition and construction very technical.

According to Mechanical Project Manager, Ben Gardner, “it’s been great to be able to partner with the Williams Civil team on this project. The collaboration and innovation have been extremely effective.”

The Mechanical contract includes a full mechanical room in the new portion of the ICU basement, as well as major updates to the existing mechanical systems across the campus. The update will harness ‘free cooling’ by utilizing updated technology on the chillers and cooling towers, leading to increased energy efficiency. The two-year project is utilizing the latest in construction technologies, to include the Trimble Total Scanning Station and 3D Building Information Modeling. These systems will allow much of the pipe fabrication to occur offsite in the Williams Prefab Shop, as well as speed up field install on-site.
